Camp Fire USA's Rural Alaska Water Safety and Recreation Program provides swimming and cold-water survival instruction and day camp activities to children and teens living in Alaska's native communities. The program came to life more than 40 years ago as a means to address the high rate of drowning in Alaska--a rate more than ten times the national average. Over the years, the program has evolved to include other activities that promote healthy life skills such as boating safety instruction, arts and crafts, cooperative games, hikes, camp-outs, teen activities, service projects and community events.

Typically, a program runs for two weeks and is facilitated by a team of two or three Camp Fire staff. Each team travels to three or four rural communities over the summer to facilitate the program. In 2009, the Rural Alaska Program visited 19 communities and served over 900 youth.
